What are your thoughts on gay/homosexual gimmicks? |
Besides the whole feminine prancing, pink wearing or half shirt/Daisy Dukes wearing version being completely passé', I hate "Gay" gimmicks. Full disclosure, however- I do let a very rare gay joke slip now and again when I'm wrestling. Sometimes my "macho" bullshit gets the best of me when I'm out in front of a crowd and I take Cheap Heat boulevard despite my best intentions. I did so last weekend; Joey Eastman called me and my tag partner “Kings” of something, and I screamed something out to the not so imaginative effect that Chunky but Funky were the “Queens”. While hardly the worst gay barb ever thrown, I felt like shit afterwards as I try to operate with my own weird code of ethics out there, and I violated them. I am apparently not nearly as enlightened as I would like to think and still have some growing up to do.

I've got a question geared more towards guys like Mav, Bob and Sonny, who I know will regularly reply on this board.
What do you do when you get burnt out by wrestling? If, of course, you get burnt out by wrestling. |

You know...I was just settling down to do something I rarely do and knock back a few rum and cokes. I've never been asked this particular question before, however...and that interests me. As such...I'm going to drink rum and cokes while answering this question rather than drink them while watching Sweeny Todd. Be warned... that means there will be no spell check and the grammar is going to be all over the place.
Wresting rarely burns me out. I've cut my schedule back from time to time and left some places before. That usually means I feel I've been in one place too long and need to try something different and/or combining with its cutting too much into my family life. My family is very important to me.
My longest layoffs in wrestling had nothing to do with injuries. At the time of my 2 kid’s births, I took 6 months off for each, 3 months on either side of the pregnancy. Beyond that...as I get older, so do the people around me. My wife's father has been in poor health for several years now, and that has on more than one occasion slowed me down. The combination of "been there forever" and more importantly, my father in law's worsening health was what caused me to first leave NECW and my dear friend Sheldon Goldberg. I didn't grow to dislike the place at all...I had to devote more time at home to my wife (who cares for her father) and it was hard to concentrate on what I was supposed to be doing in a ring...which isn't good for the wrestler or the promoter.
The only time I would ever become legitimately "burnt out" by anything in wrestling usually had more to do with either dealing with a scummy promoter making my stomach turn or a plethora of whiny guys being on a crew I was involved with. When guys bitch about how they are being used, the guy they are working with, the guy they are working for, etc...I tune it out until it becomes impossible for me to do. Wrestlers who do that have to realize something...NO ONE IS FORCING YOU TO WORK AT THIS PLACE THAT SEEMS TO VEX YOU SO MUCH. If you hate working somewhere...DON'T. To hell with "No Snitchin'"...QUIT YER BITCHEN! If I want to hear people bitch and moan, I'll take my kid's WII away from them. I expect that sort of juvenile horse shit from them...not from full grown adults. So...I guess my reaction to the burn out there is to simply give notice, wrestle my last match and leave.
Sometimes after matches, people have seen me being something other than my goofy, loud self; more like a partial walking coma/psychotic time bomb. On those nights...I'm usually working hurt. I'm a very intense person, despite how off the wall I can appear. When I'm really banged up, as stupid as it may sound, I tend to "turn inside" to get through it. I don't take pain killers, but I can put myself into a "state" where pain almost replaces emotion.
I'm convinced a human can sometimes not only endure pain, but almost like it if he/she can turn off his/her emotions. When you do that...pain is the only sensation you can feel, and since humans need some form of sensation to exist and you’re denying all other emotions/sensations, you need the one you're letting in-the pain. That doesn't burn me out. That actually gives me a sick kind of thrill...one you're average serial killer may live for. I don't like to go there often (trust me...it's scarier to realize that kind of thing about yourself later than to witness it happening), but you do what you have to to get by sometimes.
Beyond the stuff detailed above...I love this shit too much to get burned out by it. Even if I have a rough night, I can almost always look forward to dinner with the boys afterwards, during which someone like me, or Joey Eastman, or Justin Shaype or Sonny Goodspeed will hold court or even better...a competitive contest of pure obnoxiousness between one or more of the aforementioned personalities. You get Sonny telling stories and doing Scott Ashworth impressions, me being as absolutely gross as possible, Justin Shaype hitting his booming cackle and Joey Eastman not having the cells that trigger personal embarrassment in one room, add food, waitresses and other patrons to put off/insult, and you've got yourself a party.
Burn out? I worry more about my advancing age and when that and the injuries are going to make me stop. Love the party, live the party!

'cuz its all about the moves. Of course after nearly 20 years, my back doesn't bend or crack...it disintigrates.

Your thoughts on kick-pads
If I could stand it, I'd go without kneepads like Greg Valentine. To me...kick pads look curiously like an oversized winged maxi pad.
Mr. Barry, you're response? |
Ok, Im back sort of.
Being overpaid is a ridiculous statement. If a company is willing to pay what you ask for, you're not overpaid, you're paid the way you want. Its a capitalist market, work for what you wanna work for. If you aren't getting booked, lower your rate.
The Lungblower is popular because people like it. Hence why there were 10,000 stunners and diamond cutters a few years back.
I use kick pads because I throw kicks in which they are necessary. I didn't like the way the boots felt when I wore them, and I didn't feel safe using them. I may try them again one day, we will see.

They work and make money. Christopher Street Connection are unparalleled when it comes to that gimmick. It just works.

To some extent, if I go to a show I'm not booked on, etiquette states I shouldn't pay. However, I am also not entitled to a seat.

I know it's not directed towards me, but I'll respond. While being burnt out can happen, it normally comes from frustration. I have been beyond frustrated at times, but I didn't want to stop wrestling. Its Just in my blood now.
That being said, I've said from day one, the day this stops being fun, is the day I stop walking through the curtain. |

I feel that when it comes to this thread I'm underpaid by you. I mean...look at the initiative I took in answering all these questions you invited people to ask you and then left 'em hangin'...and not even with Mr. Cooper.
I have a couple of questions for you now...
1) You didn't feel safe wearing wrestling boots and you wear the pads because you kick people? For me, the opposite is true. I had some gear that came with gold kick pads. I wore the pads twice; once with boots, the second time because I forgot my boots at home one night and they were in my bag. I hated the way they looked. As to the kicking...I kick people too (I am master of the ancient art of Mavjitsu, specializing in the style of the duck fart). Flesh is soft; you won't hurt your foot unless you manage to kick through it into bone. Let 'em fly, Barry! (You can probably tell I don't work light by that explanation).
2) Ever have your spandex set off a bout of rash red crack itching hemorrhoids, and if so...any suggestions on how to treat it? I have a friend in need.
3) What are your feelings on using a root cellar for a dressing room?
4) Who was a better Captain...Kirk, John Luke Picard, Captain Janeway or whoever Scott Bakula was supposed to be?
5) Why THE FUCK did Matt Stryker shave his stomach hair into the general shape of abdominal muscles? I noticed this on the root cellar show...one line of fuzz down the middle, one on either side of that line and I think even a few designed to look like a six pack. I had one of my guys do a rip off gimmick as "the Alternate Warrior" recently, and Stryker's odd Fleet Street shave job inspired me...I drew the Alternate Warrior's abs in with a sharpie.
6) To hell with Tara Charisma...how do MY boobs feel in your hands? Not in a gay way…I just want to know for professional purposes. Call me.
