Gordon Solie was very boring to listen too. He had a good voice and a lot of knowledge but he had no excitement.

The point of the announcer is one thing and that is to get the audience into the show and if you don't do that then you have no business doing it. Joey Styles, Jim Ross, Jesse Ventura, Bobby Heenan, Vince Mcmahon, Marv Albert and others all did and do it well. Anyone can call the action but it takes a true professional to call the action and make everything seem more exciting than it already is.

Exciting isn't always better. And Solie always got me into the matches with his play-by-play. Oh yeah, you're still retarded and a fine example of what I said in the other thread:

Sadly, most people on this board finds that boring. And those people are the reasons why a lot of wrestling sucks these days.

An announcer's job in the 70's and 80's, by the golden standard set by Gordon Solie, was to do play by play and explain the strategy being employed by the wrestlers involved in the match. They were part narator, part evening news anchors. That way, when something really went haywire and there was genuine palpable excitement, concern, etc. in Solie's voice, you knew shit was about to hit the fan.

These days, every match is a backdrop for a sales pitch. Because of this, every situation is major, bah gawd...every injury is life threateningly bowling show ugly and every situation is completly JR BBQ sauce ridiculous. When every situation is like that...then none of them really are.

Things may move faster these days for an announcer, but that doesn't make it better. All that announcing style does is perpetuate the short attention span theater that wrestling has become, forcing the wrestlers to work more outragously and less believably and the announcers to call the match in kind.

I find it interesting that in a UFC/MMA type match, if an announcer took 2 minutes to break down why a fighter was trying to apply a Kimura in a certain situation, he'd be lauded for his efforts. Solie did it, and he was "boring".

It wasn't what he said that made him boring it's just that I hate slow talkers. Solie's voice always gave me the impression that he didn't care about what he was watching. If he didn't care then why should the viewer. You have to have passion in your voice. The 4 best examples of that passion is the old Jim Ross, Marv Albert, Joey Styles and Vince Mcmahon. Others have been very good at it as well including Lance Russell. Solie had a distinct voice that no one will ever forget but his announcing technique can be compared to that of John Madden in the NFL. He goes on into detail in a way that seems like he is reading a script and not from his heart.

Enforcer usually doesn't try to be funny, he just thinks you are a moron.

he doesn't have to scream. Lance Russell didn't scream and he was awesome. It's hard to explain voice tones by typing about them.

Wow. You've got me pegged. Thanks for opening up the gaping wound that runs deep in my soul. Where are those razor blades? That hurts a little. I hope my next of kind can get the blood out of the keyboard...I feel a little lightheaded...didn't realize the body had so much blood...sorry about the carpet mom...why couldn't Volture have been nicer to me?...I really am a kind soul...help me please...I thought hiding behind a Randy Orton identity could save my fragile psyche...shame I was wrong...so much shame...

Enforcer, just to derail it a minute, sorta. What do you think of Bill Mercer on World Class? I like him, and he was very reserved too. Plus, the way the Von Erichs were so far over, etc, and the Dallas crowd so hot, he didn't need to "add more to the matches" etc.
