| Enforcer, just to derail it a minute, sorta. What do you think of Bill Mercer on World Class? I like him, and he was very reserved too. Plus, the way the Von Erichs were so far over, etc, and the Dallas crowd so hot, he didn't need to "add more to the matches" etc. |
Yes, Mercer was good, though at times he seemed a little off. Mark Lowrance was pretty good too as was Bob Caudle. |

Neftali is superior to Volture, therefore, they are not equal. |

| But I see you didn't dispute his main point. |
Of course not, because he knows he'd get put in his place as a a dumb mark trying to tell a veteran of the business that he knows what sells and what doesn't. |
Um I already said I agree with him but again times change and so does what the audience wants. |
He's entitled to his opinion. My longevity has hardly turned me any sort of profit, so I'm not exactly speaking as an expert either. I do know that I've been taught that wrestling is much like any other production, play or movie. It tells a story. Sometimes, a story goes in directions the viewer may not have wanted it to...yet afterwards, the viewer is still entertained.
Very often, the best stories don't involve flashing lights, explosions or special effects every 2.4 seconds. They involve confilct and human drama built over a period of time. A good announcer is like a narrator to that story. |

As much as Enforcer hates it you just described ECW.
Bottom line is that everyone in the audience usually doesn't know what they want so it's the job of the promoter to tell them in a way that they think they got what they wanted. If you ask me the pyro is the dumbest thing in wrestling but then again I hate fireworks in general and don't understand the world's fascination with them. |
I was speaking somewhat metaphorically. ECW may be devoid of fireworks ( I wouldn't know...I've watched the damn thing like 4 times, and never from beginning to end) but the basic format still seems to be "shocking" things happening and announcers screaming about it. What kills me about that is when they want to, they can tell the best stories. Flair's last match and the build up was very good and didn't involve Ric giving Michael’s wife a ride on Space Mountain. No one ate worms, no one got an ass shoved in their faces and no one gave birth to a hand. Instead, you had a grizzled veteran trying desperately to cling to his career. Say what you will about the Old Yeller finish, the whole thing was palatable, easy to understand, easy to relate to and well done and built up over time.
That was WAY more compelling than any silly series of skits. |

Well I was speaking of the original ECW not this new garbage and I agree 100% on the Ric Flair angle |
