HARTFORD, Conn. - Connecticut's Supreme Court ruled Friday that same-sex couples have the right to marry, making the state the third behind Massachusetts and California to legalize such unions.
The divided court ruled 4-3 that gay and lesbian couples cannot be denied the freedom to marry under the state constitution, and Connecticut's civil unions law does not provide those couples with the same rights as heterosexual couples.
"I can't believe it. We're thrilled, we're absolutely overjoyed. We're finally going to be able, after 33 years, to get married," said Janet Peck of Colchester, who was a plaintiff with her partner, Carole Conklin.
"Interpreting our state constitutional provisions in accordance with firmly established equal protection principles leads inevitably to the conclusion that gay persons are entitled to marry the otherwise qualified same sex partner of their choice," Justice Richard N. Palmer wrote in the majority opinion that overturned a lower court finding.
"To decide otherwise would require us to apply one set of constitutional principles to gay persons and another to all others," Palmer wrote.
Gov. M. Jodi Rell said Friday that she disagreed, but will not fight the ruling.
"The Supreme Court has spoken," Rell said in a statement. "I do not believe their voice reflects the majority of the people of Connecticut. However, I am also firmly convinced that attempts to reverse this decision — either legislatively or by amending the state Constitution — will not meet with success."
The lawsuit was brought in 2004 after eight same-sex couples were denied marriage licenses and sued, saying their constitutional rights to equal protection and due process were violated.
They said the state's marriage law, if applied only to heterosexual couples, denied them of the financial, social and emotional benefits of marriage.
Peck said that as soon as the decision was announced, the couple started crying and hugging while juggling excited phone calls from her brother and other friends and family.
"We've always dreamed of being married," she said. "Even though we were lesbians and didn't know if that would ever come true, we always dreamed of it." |

No, they aren't, I would assume, since I never have been there. But, I don't see the need. But, this isn't a philosophical conversation. Everyone will make their choices, and there ya are. |

The question of whether pot is legal or not is irrelevant when discussing whether people should do it or not.
So many people use it, legal or not, that to me, I'd rather see a normal, rather than black market for it. I'd like to see it taxes etc...
The war on drugs does not, nor ever will work, so we should at least not have to rely on a organized crime ring for distribution. |

I'm not a big supporter of the whole "everybody is already doing it" theory on anything. I do believe marhuwanajana should be available (note I didn't say legal....I'll get to that afterward) however-for different but more obvious reasons to anyone who's ever smoked Reggae’s honorary inspirational controlled substance.
Alcohol is far more addictive and destructive than pot. Hell, so are cigarettes. Shit, you may be able to make a case for energy drinks being worse than pot. They're all legal and readily available (in the case of the Red Bull revolution, legal to sell to minors). Given that even the worst pot head lights up no more than 6 times a day-compared to cigarettes, they aren't a cancer risk. In my experience, I have never known anyone to doobie it up and smash into a family of 4 or give the wife a stiff white trash back hand. The worst pot does is make you eat the cake in the fridge you're supposed to be saving for your Aunt Matilda's birthday cake.
I think one of the often ignored reasons it hasn't been legalized is because out of all the currently illegal drugs, it's the easiest to produce yourself. A couple of florescent lights, some tin foil and some closet space and you can pretty much grow enough to keep yourself stoned out of your socks all year long. That ease in production makes it so drug companies would have a harder time making a profit on it. Why pay the overhead, handling and mark up on mass produced weak weed when you can grow something in your basement for pennies that will make you wonder about the complexities of your textured ceiling paint?
To me, making it legal would be a mess. The government fucks up everything it touches...do you REALLY want them fucking around with your high as well-especially since the government is half the reason people want the little bit of green escape in the first place? I am more in support of the slap on the wrist type punishment being bandied out in a Massachusetts bill this November (fine and they take your bag away).

I am happy with the court's decision. I see no reason to deprive people of rights. |
