Samoa Joe began 2004 looking to extend his reign as Ring of Honor heavyweight champion. March marked his 1 year title reign, and the beginning of what looked to be one of the most intense years for the champion. Coming within inches of losing the title after repeated defenses, Samoa Joe solidified his position as one of the toughest independent wrestlers in the country. From his brutal feuds with Homicide, to his classic matches with CM Punk, Joe proved to Ring of Honor that "the champ is here". In December of 2004 Samoa Joe's 21 month title reign ended at the hands of Austin Aries. 2004 also marked Samoa Joe's debut's with USA Pro Wrestling where he battled Low Ki and Jersey All Pro Wrestling where he began a heated feud with JAPW heavyweight champion Dan Maff. Samoa Joe continued to dominate the independent wrestling scene with appearances in IWA Mid-South, IWC, IWS in Montreal, and PWG, proving him to be one of the hottest wrestlers in the country.
