Live on the internets, from the Proving Grounds Dojo in Waterbury, Defiant Pro Wrestling had a show on Sunday September Two. The evening began with Double J and some broad named Selena who I am pretty sure wasn't the dead singer welcoming us and the person at home watching and letting us know the show would focus on the first round of the TV title tournament.
The first match kicked off the tourney with Guillaume DeSade with his brothers in Black Rage, Bobby Ocean and M.T. "Dim Shady" Cracker taking on the New Britain Bushwacker, Cousin Kurt Adonis. After licking the referee Kurt started the match under protest, convinced that Black Rage would be cheating. While Robert Guillaume put the bensons to Purty Kurty enough to make Adonis exclaim "Oh my goodness" several times, Black Rage apparently thought they couldn't win fair, so they hatched a cunning plan to have Cracker distract the ref while DeSade and Ocean double teamed Purty Kurty. Unfortunately for the Waterbury Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the ref caught Ocean in the ring and sent him to the back. Cracker wasn't done trying to help his man win though, and persisted in distracting the ref. Adonis took this matter into his own hands and used M.T.'s empty head as a battering ram on DeSade, dumped him outside and scored the win.
Mikey Milano then came out to let the crowd know first that this week's Defiant Pro No-Show was Dylan Kage, and secondly that his battle with Avril Gaves did not end with their street fight at the anniversary show and that he had plans for the pirate hooker in the TV title tournament. Those plans were that a battle royal would be held and the winner would then face the despicable dick.
Match two was RAW Superstar, Mark Gore taking on WAR Apparel wearing MMA shooter Del Tsunami accompanied by Penguin Prince, Paulie J. Most of the match saw the powerful Gore in control, but in the end Paulie J tripped Mark up allowing Del to get the win and advance in the tourney. Maybe Paulie J can give M.T. Cracker lessons in effective outside interference. Maybe Mark Gore can get Cryme Tyme some indy promoters numbers now that they are looking for work. Maybe I can move on to the next match.
Match Three saw a Puerto-Rican Moondog called the Puerto Rican Hound Dog take on Junior Juggalo, Lenn Oddity in a match that was not only part of the TV Title tourney, but also a battle of grey tank tops. Hound dog's was more colorful, but obviously was just a regular t-shirt he cut up. Lenn's began its life as a wifebeater and was personalized with some I.C.P. spraypaint. The match began with the two trading off bites. Neither man succumbed to rabies... yet. Then Lenn brought out his bag of fun and took out a couple of sets of Hulk Hands, giving a set of plain green ones that may have once belonged to Shark Boy to the hound dog, and keeping a pair customized to look like his own hands that may have once belonged to Wayne Coyne, for himself. After trading a few blows Hound Dog lost his hands, and dumped Lenn crotch first on the top rope, and sent him to the outside with a springboard kick off the ropes. Lenn was taking the brunt of the punishment until the Dog missed a clothesline and ran his arm into the steel ring post. Then Lenn went to work with a chair as the referee helplessy warned him, "Lenn?". Even an arabian facebuster didn't keep the large Puerto Rican down, and eventually Lenn was taking some steel chair punishment of his own. The action finally ended up in the ring, where Lenn was able to hit a face first forward piledriver on his second attempt to win the match.
Next up was a Divas match with the Porkchop Princess Ariel taking on the lovely Natalia. Much to the chagrin of Ariel and the half retarded security guy, the crowd was solidly in the Portaguese part of town. The in ring action was also dominated by Portugal, as Natalia got very little offense in. However the few moves she did get in must have scared Ariel, because she resorted to pulling the tights to get the win and retain her toy belt.
Match five was more TV title tourney action as J-Busta took on Kid Mikaze. Unfortunately this match was put on in front of a crowd that just died. The security dolt's ridiculous hushing of the most vocal fans in the previous match carried into this contest and the combatants were working in virtual silence. Both guys seemingly being babyfaces may have also played a part in the crowds shunning of it. The action was very fun though, as they tried their best to win over the crowd, Mikaze changed up his wall climb finishing it with a kick instead of a flip, and also did a Shinzaki/Hakushi style tightrope walk a third of the way around the ring, and finished the sequence with a double stomp off the top to Busta's back that just about put the Canadian's face through the canvas. Busta hit some thunderous lungblowers, including one from the top turnbuckle. The match ended in a time-limit draw, but honestly the crowd made sure there were no winners much earlier. Dave Cole came out afterwards and wanted to attack Mikaze, but Busta instead made the call to show respect and shake the kids hand.
Intermission time and I got a hot-dog and Sweet Valley cola. I forgot my coupon at home, but was hungry enough to pay. Maybe I can use my coupon next week? I'm all about saving money. I put my head as far down into my crossword puzzle as I could but Pat Gunner still came over and shook my hand. God that annoys me to no end.
The second half of the show began with Avil coming out to watch the battle royal to determine his tourney opponent. The competitors were BMT, Cheech, The Puerto Rican Hound Dog, A large white guy, Michael Clark Duncan (or possibly some large black guy I never saw before) and um... Ariel. Ariel came to the ring wearing a snazzy BMT t-shirt, so they teamed up at first, girls against the guys. I've never seen this BMT work before and enjoyed his poor man's Human Tornado act. His alliance with the Portugese lass was short lived, as he was the first person eliminated and it was at her hands. Next to go were the big black guy and the big white guy, who were battling against the ropes and Ariel was able to easily eliminate with a little bit of leverage. Cheech and Ariel had gone at it earlier in the bout but worked together to eliminate the Puerto Rican Moon Dog. As Cheech celebrated this minor victory, his hopes to go further in the tourney went up in smoke, as Ariel eliminated him and won the whole thing.
Avil then came to the ring and said he wasn't here to wrestle a broad and protested. Ariel got uppity real quick and the brawl was soon on. While he took her lightly at times, Graves had the upper hand quick and went for a cover when he realized there was no ref! Who should run in wearing the zebra jersey but his nemesis, Mikey Milano. Graves remained in control but Milano slow counted every pin he made, or just plain out gave the pirate hooker the finger instead of counting three. As frustrated as he was getting, Avil still was pretty amused with wrestling a girl, opting to spank her and cop a feel of her boob instead of kicking and chopping her which was starting to infuriate the firey princess. The action went outside and Ariel got the upper hand for a bit, taking shots at the pirate with a steel chair. Somehow, he recovered and got her back in the ring. Avil stupidly tried to punch her in the junk, which obviously had no effect. She retaliated with her own nut shot, and hit a ddt to win the match! Milano and Ariel flipped him the bird and headed to the back as Avil through a small tantrum and left the ring whinging about Mikey.
Another T.V.T.T.M. was next, in a battle of the heel stables, as Bobby (not Billy) Ocean of Black Rage took on Chris Mooch, of Paulie J's Marching Penguins. This match saw the jacked Mooch who the crowd was solidly behind mostly abusing the smaller Ocean. Paulie J once again proved his worth as a ringside force, running off M.T. Cracker, and Mooch himself neutralized any interference from the Marquis Guillaume DeSade after folding him up with a suplex. The Stratford Suplex Machine then went on to win after dishing up a t-bone on Bobby and making the pin. He left the ring to the crowd chanting his name.
Aged Mick Foley tribute act Ron Zombie came to the ring and humbly apologized for not being able to compete. He then referenced a bunch of horror movies and The Munsters while introducing his hand chosen replacement in the brackets, Nocturne!
Noc received a standing ovation as a welcome and his opponent Dave Cole soon made his way to the ring. After spilling outside momentarily early and taking a few cheap shots at Nocturnes recently injured back, Cole worked a clean match, targeting the skeletal warriors spine as a weak spot. Even after taking the brunt of jackhammer like powerbombs and catching Coles knees in the back when he attempted a swanton bomb, Noc was able to turn things around in the end and hit his package piledriver on the Canadian for the win. Like Busta earlier in the night, Cole also offered a handshake as a sign of respect after the match. Noc then left to another standing ovation.
Match ten saw a fourteen year old lose to a sixteen year old with the help of a twentyish year old referee as Jonathon Ramirez took on Seven Letters (50 point bonus!). I hope that they make this tool Seven a heel, because I just hated this punk. The match was basically style versus substance as the solid working, but charismatically challenged Ramirez worked against the flashy, arrogant, Seven. If I were running a wrestling school and saw one of my students do a joking spot of taking a drag of someone's cigarette in the middle of one of his first matches, I would make sure the boy would get stretched next time he worked out, and he'd be sweeping the dojo for weeks. Much of his offense seemed to be right out of Johnny Nitro's playbook. Of all the people to emulate, I find this befuddling. Anyhow, Ramirez was working this twat over in the corner when the referee got a bit physical with him trying to get a clean break. Ramirez protested and the ref instead of sending Ramirez to his room without his Xbox, decked the child and made a fast count when Seven made a cover, allowing the douche to move on in the tourney. Ramirez then chased an ice cream truck down the street to get a bomb pop.
The main event of Dreadful Gunns versus Slyck Waggoner Brown and Bald Anthony DeVito finished up the night in a pretty boring match. The entertainment in this was mainly provided by Ryan Coxxx taking a page out of the same book Mark Malibu was reading the day before at P.G.W. at the other end of route 8 and doing an Ultimate Warrior tribute complete with tassles and facepaint. In ring the action was based upon fat guy on fat guy violence, with DeVito battling Dredd. Gunner used some of his Great Khali moves on Tony and the Champ, and the end came pretty mericfully quick when Slyck got crotched on the ropes and dumped outside, and Gunner and Bull hit whatever they call the Heart Attack for the win. After the match the four combatants laughed and shook hands and giggled at the Ultimate Coxxxx. I tried to wake up for the drive home.
Additional Comments: Sound guy did the announcing from the sound board, he did ok, but not having someone in the ring with a mic makes the transitions of entrances and promos awkward. I'd ask if it is really that hard to find competent ring announcers, but as I have seen in, say... Bridgeport... the answer is yes. You would think that they could get someone with some professional aspiration to voice work, like maybe from the Connecticut School of Broadcasting or something, just to make the show flow easier. Crowd was small but spread out around all four sides of the dojo. The joke of Ariel having the security lunchbox quiet down the vocal Portogeuse fans was funny til the dork took it upon himself to decide that they were being "too loud" and trying to shut them up for real. One of the things DPW has going for it is a rowdy following that makes for a fun atmosphere and this tool singlehandedly damaged that for a good portion of the show. I think short of the fans doing something truely tasteless like making fun of Ariel's recent family tragedy, its just insane to try to discipline people from getting into the show. During intermission, I swear I overheard Milano tell someone they came to the worst possible show. I think he was being a little hard on it, I thought it was pretty solid with a lot of fresh matchups and good action. Return date is next Sunday, I hope its a little earlier, because I would like to get to Stew Leonard's afterwards while they still have the chicken wings out. |

Well, my 19 hour vacation is over..haha. Kuro, that is an excellent, and very entertaining report. I did catch your shot in the last paragraph..haha., but I also applaud your honesty on the card. It sounds like there was a lot of fun stuff, but Im surprised the crowd was quiet for a top match, like Busta and Mikaze, and a good main event.
Also, good to see Noc back there too. Im gonna predict he wins the whole tournament. |

Mr. Red
I'm glad to read that people agreed that it was foolish to tell us to "quiet down" during a wrestling show. Especially one that was being streamed online.
First off, the security guy is not at fault for telling us to shut up. He was only following JJ's orders (or so we were told.) Supposedly, JJ was not happy with us making as much noise as we were for Ariel and told Security guy to quiet us down. We took this as an affront seeing as we paid our $10 to get in and have fun. I asked if this was what Milano wanted because it totally went against his promo where he told the crowd to be as loud as possible for the benefit of the Internet broadcast.
We decided that for the next match, no matter who it was, we were going to be silent for and comply with JJ's wishes for a dead crowd. It sucked that the next match happened to be a phenomenal performance by Mikaze and Busta, but we had to stick to our guns here.
On that note, we want to apologize to Kid Mikaze and J-Busta if we disrespected them in any way by not reacting to their match.
During that match, Dredd's wife walked past us and said to us "You boys make as much noise as you want."
At intermission, Avil Graves came up to some of us and said essentially the same thing. We paid our money and we should make our noise. Mr.Green and I went up to Milano to ask if he legitimately wanted us to be quiet because, if he did, we would have just left without causing any more trouble.
Milano told us that as far as he was concerned, we paid so we can scream and go nuts. He explained that the only problem he had was that they were trying to get Ariel over as a heel and we weren't letting that happen. He also said that if we decide to come to the next show that we can (if we want) flip out on JJ with various expletives during his opening promo.
We were happy to learn that a lot of the wrestlers agreed that it was wrong for JJ to tell paying fans to be quiet during a show. Thanks guys.
All of that "shut up" drama killed our moods for the rest of the show and we left early. We heard that Brian Cox came out as "Ultimate Cox" and cut a hilarious Jim Hellwig-style promo. Its a shame we missed that.
It was great to see Noc back in DPW.
Mooch and Shaft put on a great match. Those are probably the next two guys we're going to mark out for next. Assuming they even want us back at the next show... |

FORW - you dont need to do any personality gimmicks here. your "real" post is spot on
but.... i have a bone to pick. someone told you to shut up because you were cheering for a heel? HUH? who cares! This aint the wwe, where 90% of the fans do what they are told. This is the indys. CHEER who you wanna cheer, boo who you wanna boo! You paid your $10 to enter, so, cheer and boo whomever you want.
i understand they want ariel as a heel, but, thats what they want. if the fans want to cheer her, then oh well. Not all fans follow the flow. i know i dont. I always boo lenn oddity. why? well, lenn is a cool guy outside the ring, but, i love to see him get beat up, it entertains me, esp when jim sullivan is doing it. The fact that im going out of my way to make noise for lenn, no matter if its booing or cheering, means i give a shit and i respect him. then on the other hand, theres "REAL" booing, when you legit cannot stand a wrestlers wrestling or something of the like...in which case, has happened plenty of times.
i wont go to a promotion that tell me when to boo or to cheer, period. nor should anyone. i go to shows to have fun and enjoy myself, not to be told what to do and what not to do.
Brian Anthony was a face at NEW, yet 75% of the crowd were giving him heat. No one came out and told the crowd to cheer him. romeo stayed heel and brian stayed face, thats there jobs.
A crowd CAN change a wrestler or wrestlers. Look at the NOW in NEW.... last 2 times, they were "the good guys" yet, always booed and you had hundreds of people chanting "no more now" and etc. if enough crowds do that time and time again, sometimes, the booker will do it, if its for the better.
Look at sid vs lawler. sid got HUGE pops and jerry didnt. sid knew jerry was the good guy, so, he turned the crowd against him, to get him to be the bad guy. a guy like sid can do that because hes a professional and hones those types of skills. any good all around wrestler could turn a crowd for or against him.
maybe dpw should do more to get ariel more over as a heel? or maybe listen to the crowd? or just ignore it, and do whatever they want, because, they can! |
The final journey or just the beginning?

I agree in Principal w what FF has said, but Ive been in the same spot w guys like Walters. Always cheer him, even as a heel. The guys at DPW are VERY vocal for Ariel, and it does hurt the perceived character. So, maybe they should turn Ariel face, as that would seem to be what most of the fans want.
one thing that FF said that is dead on. Better to get a reaction, that isnt what they wanted, than to get no reaction. Ive been to a couple shows where the fans had as much life as a cadaver. At least cheer/boo something, anything.. |

Hello everyone.
Mike Milano here.
I wasn't going to comment on this particular situation initially, because I try to just let people say whatever they like to on here. They are certainly entitled to do so. However, with all the potential PR headaches this can continue to cause, I thought it best to at least address the situation.
First and foremost let me say this.. Most of you have known me for quite awhile. To think that I personally would want people to be quiet is silly. It's all about the interaction and connection with the fans that make the show. Let's just say that quiet in general, has never been my strong point.
While I understand the negativity towards J.J., I don't neccesarily agree with it either. I'm not always one to let my commentators in on what's going on, because I like them to 1) Be spontaneous, and 2) Have a good time as well as the fans.
J.J. knew that we had been attempting to have Ariel be the lead heel for the women. So he just was trying to keep scenario going. What he didn't know was that I was going to tweak that a bit and just settle in with the fact that while she might not be the "superbad" that I anticipated(largely due to the select group of guys above..which is fine), she could be percieved as one badass girl who could take on anybody. That was the direction I chose to go with at the taping.
That being said, J.J. was just being passionate about what the goal was supposed to be. Could it have been handled better?..Of course. Should J.J. be villified for it on a personal level?..Absolutly not. If he is guilty of anything it is caring immensly about what the particular vision is at any given time for the company.
As mentioned earlier, I did talk to the guys who were asked to be quiet. I was under the assumption that we had worked the situation out. Apparently I was mistaken, due to the negative backlash on here tonight. That is unfortunate, but such is life. I have no ill will. I love those guys being at the shows. They add a unique energy that many indy shows are lacking. So that being said, yell all you want, for whoever you want my friends. As long as your making noise!
I would be remiss if I didn't address another issue.
While I truly believe that people can say what they want about our shows, myself in general, DPW in particular. I don't think it's all that funny and productive to be quite as mean spirited as some people are with their reviews. There are parts of Kuro's reviews I really find funny as all hell. There are other parts that are just unecessary. Phrases such as "Porkchop Princess".."half retarted security guy"..being annoyed because a performer wants to shake your hand in a show of gratitude for being there, refrencing negativly the ages of the students (which you are incorrect with, especially about Sevin.). Alot of that is malicious in my estimation. However, go right ahead and do what you do. It is your peroggative. That is simply my humble opinion. By the way, it's Mike, not Mikey
This next statement..."During intermission, I swear I overheard Milano tell someone they came to the worst possible show."...totally untrue. What you probably eavesdropped on was the fact that it may be the worst day ever to run a show because the vast majority of the locker room was sick as dogs, myself included, with the start of some bad colds and pnumonia.
In summation...
I hope to see all the F.O.R.W. crew, Mr. Kuro and anyone else that would like to attend, at as many DPW events as possible!
Chant, Say, Write, whatever you like. While I might not agree, it's your right to do so. I spent 7 years of my life all over the world defending your right to do so, so by all means, go right ahead!
It's like I've said a million times, as long as your talking about us!
Do What you Love, Love What You Do... I know I do!
Ciao,
Milano |

Thanks for clearing things up Mick. I was just "reporting" on what I saw and heard, and hoped to get the full story behind the things I had only my perspective on. I try not to be a busybody, but mentioned what I thought I heard you say during the break, because I found it out of character for you. As for my writing style, I offer no apologies, but there is no malice, I'm just a politically incorrect cranky old man. All the Bill Apter classes were full when I took Wrestling Board Composition 101, so I took an Eddie Ellner session instead. If people were writing about me, I'd just laugh at being called a Polack Pauper, and shrug off being called half-retarded... since by my estimation I am closer to three quarters. The students are going to look like kids for a few more years, they might as well get used to people commenting on it. Other then getting their ages incorrect, did I get the jist of the characters the young boys were portraying? I'd say that means more than noting that they look like they should probably be in a bouncy castle instead of a wrestling ring. Call me a traditionalist, but I am not for a lot of the interaction between workers and fans at the indy level. The Gunns thanking everyone for coming is just a personal annoyance for me, I know most people enjoy it, but short of hiding in the car 'til the show started back up I don't know how my body language could have said "just leave me alone" any louder. I guess it could be worse, at PGW on Saturday some nitwit (and I think legit mentally disabled) fan wanted to play twenty questions with me while I was trying to enjoy my half-cooked hamburger. I was about ready to hop in my car and skip the second half of the show when he finally left me alone. At least that annoying Pat Gunner is a babyface, you talk about trying to get people over as heels, I think having people like Zombie (up until the last few weeks) and Graves staying in back during the interval would help that.
While I hardly consider myself any kind of journalist anymore, I'd like to think I am at least doing a little bit a service for folks who are interested in your shows but aren't able to make it to the ones I can attend, letting them know what went down, hopefully with a little bit of entertainment of my own thrown in. I may not like everything that happens at a show, but hope people have the common sense to realize I wouldn't do this if I didn't overall generally enjoy the product myself.
God, I'm embarrassingly emo at five am. I really should sleep at night. |
