#1 - How did you get your start in the business? Where was your first match and who was it against? How did it feel to finally wrestle in a match?
I grew up in the wrestling business, well sort of anyway. My grandfather was the late great Wild Bull Curry. He wrestled from the late 1930's to the late 1970's. He was one of the first and best "wildmen" in the business. Through most of his career he was a notorious heel who was one of the original wrestlers to utilize the hardcore style. Back in those days there were only territories throughout the US and the world based off of major cities and regions. He worked for just about all of them throughout the world including the,New York(WWWF), Detroit, Dallas, Houston, Amarillo, Florida, Minnesota, San Fransisco, Japan, Vancouver, Nova Scotia, territories along with so many more.
My father, Flying Fred Curry, was also a wrestler whose active career spanned from the mid 60's to early 80's. His style was more of a babyface brand incorporating more technical and high-flying aspects to his repertoire. Quite the opposite of the Bull. I suppose he did it to separate his career from my grandad's. Though shorter, his career had the most success in the Detroit, Dallas, and Hawaii territories with three stints for Vince Sr. in New York.
When I was growing up my father was at the end of his career and only worked part time for what was left of the erroding Detroit territory in the early 80's. I would travel with him from time to time in the summer and at an early age enjoyed a behind the scenes experience of the wrestling business. Though past their primes I remember being around wrestlers such as the original Sheik, Bobo Brazil, Luis Martinez, Bulldog Brower, Rocky Johnson, and so many more. Also, of note I was able to see a young Sabu, known then as Superfly Terry Brunk break in to the business. In fact one of his first matches if not the first match he had as Sabu "the Elephant Boy" was against my father in Toledo, Ohio.
Even though I was around it quite a bit I never really had any vested entrance in wrestling. I got into it a bit when Savage won the title at Wrestlemania 4 up until the Mega-powers exploding stuff but then kinda lost interest again. Part of my lack of consideration was that my father didn't want me to ever pursue any kind of wrestling career and to use my head for something better than a "punching bag". And so it went until I became interested in wrestling again. This time I was a bit older. I was in college at the Ohio State University where I played lacrosse for the Buckeyes. Keep in mind this was also during the age of pro wrestling's resurgence with WWF attitude, WCW/NWO, and ECW. My buddies and I were all into it and they would always tell me I should get into it. I still kind of laughed it off.
Then one day I really started to consider wrestling. It was the day after my last college game and I was walking across an empty field that I would never play on again. Realizing that I had no desire to pursue an obscure professional lacrosse career, I wondered what would fill that void of excitement that was now gone. So, I figured why not professional wrestling. I bugged my father to train me which he did for three months beating the crap out of me all the way and then he sent me to train with Dory Funk Jr. in Florida off and on for a year or so and the rest is history.
My first wrestling match was in Columbus, Ohio in the late summer of 1999. I was to tag with my father against a guy name TNT and JW Hawk. I was very excited to say the least. However, one week before the match I was training in my father's wrestking gym with a couple of other guys. Luckily, dad wasn't there that night. Anyway, I was taking an armdrag from one of the new guys and he kind of grab me a little too deep and really flung me over his shoulder causing me to land really awkwardly resulting somehow into me tearing my groin....really...really badly. Mind you my debut, tagging with my dad was a week away. So, all throughout the week I stayed clear of my father trying to play off my injuring getting treatments on the side. Well, day of the match comes and I'm still hurting. But, the excitement, 600 fans, being in my hometown, and fear of my dad's scrutiny got me through the match.
After the match I was happy it was over. I don't remember much of it other than my father screaming at me from th apron and my opponents telling me to relax. I didn't really know what the hell I was doing, but who does in their first match. I suppose the best part of it for me was the original Sheik actually came to the show for me. He had Sabu drive him down from Lansing, Michigan to make the show. Before the match he sat me down told me to relax and told me that he was there because my grandfather, who passed in 1985, could not be. It was pretty special.
#2 - What current promotions do you currently work for?
Currently I work for NECW, EPW, NEW, and PHNE.
#3 - If there was one wrestler who you would love to work with but haven't as of yet, who would that be?
Oh boy, that's a tough one. I don't really know. There are some guys I would love to work against again. I used to enjoy wrestling against Nick Richards, Dylan Kage, and Tim McNeany. Guys I would like to wrestle again would be Chris Venom, Mike Sain, Bob Evans, and Alex Arion. I think the current NECW champs of myself and Chase Delmonte would do well against the original Hot Shots, the A List, or the Logans. Of course I'm always game to team with my good friend Kurt Adonis against anyone as the CT Idols. Now as far as the Rocket Fred Curry wrestling someone he has never taken on before I think I would have a hell of a match with the NWA's Adam Pearce.
#4 - If you were offered a contract by TNA or WWE, who would you work for and why?
I would consider any opportunity with either as anyone would I guess. Convenience wise I suppose TNA. The schedule seems to offer a bit more freedom in an off wrestling schedule. You work for the WWE you better be ready for a full commitment.
#5 - Is there anything else you would like to add? Any upcoming shows you will be on?
Some upcoming shows are NECW in Quincy on March 29, EPW in Fall River on April 4 and in Plainfield on April 5, and NEW on May 4 in Bloomfield, CT. I'm sure there will be more, but those are confirmed dates. |
