RIP George, you were one of the greatest comedians ever.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/23/AR2008062300050.html

Quote:
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital on Sunday, a spokesman said. He was 71.

Carlin, who had a history of heart problems, died at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. PDT (9 p.m. EDT) after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters.

Known for his edgy, provocative material, Carlin achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine about seven dirty words you could not say on television. A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of his "Filthy Words" routine ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

Also taken from Wiki, will likely be pulled:
Quote:
On June 18, 2008, four days before his death, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC announced that Carlin would be the 2008 honoree of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor to be awarded in November of that year. [34]. According to witnesses on the scene, Carlin's death was caused by the apparition of Jesus Christ, who allegedly pointed at George in a playful manner and said, 'told you so'. Shortly after, a coroner pronounced the 71 year old comedian dead.

I just refreshed that Wiki page and that line was pulled already.

I was really really bummed when I turned on the tv this morning and found out about this. Carlin was an American classic. It just seemed like somehow he'd always be around.

On a side note, that Wiki entry sounds like a joke Carlin himself might have told, so in a dark way it's kind of appropriate.

That sucks. RIP to my favoritte comedian of all time. I always loved seeing his standup as well as his movies. Who could forget George as the cab driver in car wash or better yet Rufus from Bill & Ted. George was an innovator and pushed the envelope a lot with his humor. He was a regular in Kevin Smith movies which I would have to say his role in Dogma was his best. I always wanted to meet George and now I won't be able to. George will be missed but let us never forget him by reliving the great memories he gave us through his videos. "Get on the plane, get on the plane, Fuck you I'm getting in the plane. Let evil knievel get on the plane".

I was sad to learn that he passed away. Had the pleasure of catching his show live in Hampton Beach at the Casino Ballroom in 2006.
The opening act was FUCKING TERRIBLE, but Carlin was pure gold, pure gold indeed.

One of the last legendary comendians whose comedy spanned the decades.

I thought he was just an ok comic. Alot of his stuff didn't seem funny to me. And I thought he was a horrible actor. However, my thoughts go out to his family, friends, and fans.

I totally agree with that statement.

I saw George in 2001 at the F.M. Kirby Center in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. My late grandmother had given me some money for a birthday gift, and I used that money to buy a ticket to George's show a week after my birthday. I got the last available ticket in the theater. I enjoyed the show very much...and certainly got my money's worth. May George rest in peace.

Today has sucked. I'm at home following a day of camping which has ruined fishing with torrential downpours. The kids are at each other's throats...plus it's tough to get laid in the camper. So, I come home to check on the cats and check email before heading back out to my drenched camp spot...and see on my MSN page that George Carlin has died.

To me, Carlin was one of the few people able to completely cut through the righteous bullshit and PC gone amok double speak that has become the way we communicate with each other. He's gone...and we've lost a piece of ourselves with him.
