Mine are:

1. Essex Seafood in Essex, MA
Sweetest fried clams in the area
Underrated, uncrowded gem in an area of intense competition

2. Lobster Pound in Hingham, MA
Best clam shack convenient to Nantasket beach

3. Clam Shack in Kennebunkport, ME
#3 just because I get there only once a year if I'm lucky

MMMM, not many around here. We like Chicks up in West Haven. Don't go much because not much I can eat there most of the time. They have good clam strips though for a treat. The whole clams are gross, the strips are cool though. Then the boardwalk is close by to undo a tad of the caloric damage.

Let's add this to the discussion. Also, please note, strips or whole bellies?

Bellies here

I converted two summers ago. Before that, I didn't think I could handle a belly but I loved my strips.

I havent had them in a long time. My friend and I used to get em here in Niantic at Constantines. awesome. My dad used to take me to Kelly's landing.

Holly, PLEASE KEEP QUIET if you cant eat them, and WHOLE CLAMS are NOT gross. Cripes almighty.

Joshua. just let me know, gotta give me a couple weeks notice, Id love to come up. spend the day up in old stomping grounds of Salem and Saugus, lots of family memories, and then I'd shoot over to Gloucester for the Ocean and WHOLE BELLY FREAKING CLAMS. Smile

Oh, I didnt see your post Josh. I like strips, but they cant hold a candle to bellies. Lightly fried, w lemon. (most times I skip tartar sauce, not always tho..haha)

Not sure if this counts, but Iggy's does serve clamcakes.

http://www.iggysdoughboys.com/

Two locations:

889 Oakland Beach Avenue in Warwick, RI
1157 Point Judith Road in Narragansett, RI

The Warwick location was torn down and rebuilt within this past year. I believe the Narragansett location is only open during the summer months.

Another great place...this one on Cape Cod:

http://www.spankysclamshack.com/

Spanky's Clam Shack
138 Ocean Street
Hyannis, MA
(near the pier where you can catch the ferry for Nantucket and/or Martha's Vineyard)

The food at both Iggy's and Spanky's is very good and reasonably priced.

Speaking of Salem, if you play pinball, I'd definitely be up for playing some silverball at the Willows.

I suck at pinball, but would give it a shot. hehe. Any good clam joints in Salem? I don't recall. Man, I spent many younger years at the Willows. Flounder fishing w my dad, and the arcade and mini golf. Last time I was there, was a bad memory, but Id be up for that stuff too. Sounds like a good time for later this Summer Josh.

Hey, I've been to #3. My sister lives up in Kennebunkport and when we go to visit we always make a stop at the Clam Shack. Ya gotta keep your eyes on your clams though, those seagulls are SCAVANGERS!

Yeah righto..hehe.

I remember one Josh, I was on the way to my friends, who lives iN Disgusta Maine, and I had clams at some joint just outta Wells I think. It was a shed, and when I asked for Whole Belly clams, I got "JUST BELLY' without the strip thats attached to the belly. They were just round, and deeper fried. They tasted good till they caught up to me..

The ones In the picture I posted look awesome. I look forward to having em. Last time I did was in Essex I think last October when my dad came up, had them w him, my Aunt, and two Uncles and ????Step Aunt? But, I don't recall the name of the restaurant. was a nice sit down place. Smaller than I hoped, but awesome. We did pass one place, there was literally a line out the door bout fifteen outside, waiting to get in.

I always am, Ghost, unless provoked.....

I thought of another one. Not really a shack, more like a diner kind of thing. It's called Goodes and is across from Shop Rite where I work. They have some good fried clams there. The same people own another Goodes over by Gulf Beach in Miford which would be classified as a shack. I think Danny's in Stratford down by the old Bradlees is pretty decent.

Ghost,

You say "nice sit down place" so that could definitely be Periwinkle's.

http://www.periwinklesrestaurant.com/

But then you say smaller than you hoped. Was it more of a shack with seating? Could have also been Farnham's.

You'd probably remember if it was Woodman's or Clam Box. Both are very brand name establishments. Most likely you saw the line outside Woodman's.

No, the clams were smaller..hehe.

Clam box was definitely the name of the other place. This restaurant was further on up past there, a few miles on the same side. Regardless, they were really good..man, now Im hungry, Maybe I'll get clam strips at Shaws..Ho Jos..not great..but edible..haha. Smile

Another good place on Cape Cod:

The Red Nun
746 Main Street (Route 28)
Chatham, MA
(adjacent to Veterans Field...the home of the Chatham A's of the Cape Cod Baseball League)

http://www.rednun.com/

From their menu:

Quote:
fried clams – locally shucked soft shell clams deep fried and served with french fries, coleslaw , lemon and tartar sauce

http://www.rednun.com/Menu%2006.pdf

I know the "menu" link says 2006, but I was at the Red Nun last night (while attending the Chatham A's game), and the menu seems to be the same.

Sadly, some of that stuff I can't eat, due to allergies. What a deal though. Whole Belly clams are almost always priced "to market" like lobster, so Ive seen prices vary depending on how plentiful they are, etc.

Thx to Shawn, Dave, Josh and everyone who has suggested some of their favorite clam places. Something good to look forward to this year.. Smile
