Quote:
Nine-year-old Jericho Scott is a good baseball player— too good, it turns out.

The right-hander has a fastball that tops out at about 40 mph. He throws so hard that the Youth Baseball League of New Haven told his coach that the boy could not pitch any more. When Jericho took the mound anyway last week, the opposing team forfeited the game, packed its gear and left, his coach said.

Officials for the three-year-old league, which has eight teams and about 100 players, said they will disband Jericho’s team, redistributing its players among other squads, and offered to refund $50 sign-up fees to anyone who asks for it. They say Jericho’s coach, Wilfred Vidro, has resigned.

But Vidro says he didn’t quit and the team refuses to disband. Players and parents held a protest at the league’s field on Saturday urging the league to let Jericho pitch.

“He’s never hurt any one,” Vidro said. “He’s on target all the time. How can you punish a kid for being too good?”

The controversy bothers Jericho, who says he misses pitching.

“I feel sad,” he said. “I feel like it’s all my fault nobody could play.”

Jericho’s coach and parents say the boy is being unfairly targeted because he turned down an invitation to join the defending league champion, which is sponsored by an employer of one of the league’s administrators.

Jericho instead joined a team sponsored by Will Power Fitness. The team was 8-0 and on its way to the playoffs when Jericho was banned from pitching.

“I think it’s discouraging when you’re telling a 9-year-old you’re too good at something,” said his mother, Nicole Scott. “The whole objective in life is to find something you’re good at and stick with it. I’d rather he spend all his time on the baseball field than idolizing someone standing on the street corner.”

League attorney Peter Noble says the only factor in banning Jericho from the mound is his pitches are just too fast.

“He is a very skilled player, a very hard thrower,” Noble said. “There are a lot of beginners. This is not a high-powered league. This is a developmental league whose main purpose is to promote the sport.”

Noble acknowledged that Jericho had not beaned any batters in the co-ed league of 8- to 10-year-olds, but say parents expressed safety concerns.

“Facing that kind of speed” is frightening for beginning players, Noble said.

League officials say they first told Vidro that the boy could not pitch after a game on Aug. 13. Jericho played second base the next game on Aug. 16. But when he took the mound Wednesday, the other team walked off and a forfeit was called.

League officials say Jericho’s mother became irate, threatening them and vowing to get the league shut down.

“I have never seen behavior of a parent like the behavior Jericho’s mother exhibited Wednesday night,” Noble said.

Scott denies threatening any one, but said she did call the police.

League officials suggested that Jericho play other positions, or pitch against older players or in a different league.

Local attorney John Williams was planning to meet with Jericho’s parents Monday to discuss legal options.

“You don’t have to be learned in the law to know in your heart that it’s wrong,” he said. “Now you have to be punished because you excel at something?”

Yes, it is sad...to see both sides of this story acting like a bunch of whiney bitches. Both sides of this should be ashamed of themselves. The one side for walking off the field when the kid took the mound, and the mother for causing a ruckus at the ball game.

Here is the WTNH-TV Channel 8 version of this story:

http://www.wtnh.com/Global/story.asp?S=8903710

Quote:
New Haven (WTNH) -- A baseball battle is going another inning in the Elm City.

News Channel 8 was the first to report about a 9-year-old taken off the mound because of his powerful pitch. Tuesday night, that youth league is speaking out. A conference is being held at Crisculo Field in New Haven.

Jericho Scott and his fast ball are all the talk in the world of baseball.

Cox: "How do you feel about all this attention since we first put your story on TV?"
Scott: "How do I feel about it? I'm proud of myself."

Scott is a good pitcher; so good, that last week the league asked the coach of Will Power Fitness to have him play another position. This request surfaced despite the fact that the league is for 8-10 year olds.

The New Haven-based Liga Juvenile de Baseball claims less experienced players were afraid to bat against Scott.

The coach kept him on the mound, resulting in the league taking the team off the schedule. This is an unusual step according to those in youth baseball.

"Under the rules, he should be allowed to pitch," Mel Zeidenberg, of Westville Youth Activity, said.

Zeidenberg had been involved with Westville Baseball for decades. They even named a field after him.

The longtime little leaguer says too much focus has been put on winning instead of just playing the game.

"To take a whole team off the field, I don't see that," Zeidenberg said. "Let the kids play. The kids should be number one.:

Cox: "Does this make sense?"
Scott: "No. Can't come up to somebody and tell them they're too good to play baseball."

Why not? That's what many people out there want to have happen, in many areas. It's the youth soccer mentality. Eveyone is a winner!

I don't see how anyone can say the mother was wrong in this scenario.

Coming off the Olympics, where we make a hero out of the best athletes, here they try to stop the best player from playing b/c its not fair that he is so good? what a joke. So she threw a tantrum, maybe threw her notebook on the ground. She was right to tell this league they should be shut down.

The good of this, is that the kid's talent will be recognized and hopefully he blooms into a major league ballplayer. Some lesson being taught here. If you can't excel, don't worry, we'll bring everybody down to average level.

I hate that "everyone's a winner" horse shit! Children need to learn about winning and losing. It builds morale character and gives them life experience.

Sportsmanship is good, but at that level, the kids should care about winning, and they do at the LLWS.

This story flabbergasted me when I heard about it on the radio, then read about it. But what really drove home how ridiculous it all is is when I saw it on the news last night, and made it apparent how young 9 years old is. Shame on the league. I am glad they are becoming a national embarrassment.

I was watching Demolition Man this weekend and I realized that the world may actually be turning into the faux nicey-nice world of the future that movie poked fun at. Shit like this only adds to my suspicion that soon we’ll all be wiping our ass with a three seashell arrangement while singing the Armor hot dog song and have sex via helmet based nueron wave transmitters rather than exchanging body fluids. It’s enough to make me want to engage in a few murderdeathkills.

Be well, John Spartan. I'm moving to the sewer with the rest of the scrubs.
