During my vacation, Misha, George, and I attended Global Warming at the Toyota Sports Center in El Sagundo. It's a hockey facility in the Los Angeles area, near LAX airport. I wanted to see Christopher Daniels, Frankie Kazarian, Human Tornado, and TJ Perkins. Ricky Reyes, CW Anderson, and Steve Corino were also on the card.
The crowd size was about the same as at an NECW event. That surprised me, with all those names. The crowd was very calm and about a third were supportive, starting clapping sequences to show that they were into it. Not a bad percentage of active participants. Less of them were vocal. A few times, I tried to start a chant with a wrestlers name and absolutely no one chimed in. No one used foul language. Very different than Boston crowds.
The MC (not the ring announcer) was one of the WSX announcers.
Human Tornado participated in a lumberjack match.
One of the participants (to the left of Tornado) had a pretty good gimmick where he moved through the crowd and intimidated people. He had one of the livelier fans cowering by the wall. That same fan had previously greeted a wrestler with a gay gimmick by offering to hug him and was instead kissed on the mouth.
There were quite a few Spanish speaking wrestlers.
One of the matches was Joey Ryan vs a guy announced as being from OVW. Sorry, can't remember his name. He ended up getting Ryan's valet to take a drink from his flask and then announced she was coming him with him.
The valet was way hot and was wearing a sexy mini dress with only a thong underneath. She got in and out of the ring many times before, during, and after the match.
During intermission, I said hi to Christopher Daniels who was at his merch table. He was nice and shook my hand and thanked me for coming.
The ring announcer introduced Lee Marshall (who used to do the WCW road report) and was evidently influential in the Los Angeles wrestling scene. But instead of a tribute, it turned into a confrontation when another guy came out and got into a battle of words regarding TV ratings and stuff fans didn't care about. And due to the room echo, you couldn't make out too much of what anyone said on the mic all night. Lee finally did a guest ring announce spot.
He and Kazarian wrestled CW Anderson and a guy I didn't know. The match was ok, with Daniels and Kararian pulling out many of their signature moves.
My favorite part of the night was seeing TJ Perkins live. He wrestled Ricky Reyes who worked heel but was over with most of the vocal fans. This was a good, long match with a slow build.
If I remember correctly, Reyes won.
Then Steve Corino came out to wrestle someone I didn't know, and the ring announcer said it was the main event. I asked a local fan if Human Tornado was wrestling and he said he thinks he had knee surgery and wasn't wrestling. Darn. Steve Corino took the mic and we decided to leave. He was still on the mic when we left the building. I just didn't care enough about a Steve Corino match to stay, and we were anxious to get to the Santa Monica Pier.
It was also announced that the Dragon Gate show would be coming next month, and people could buy tickets from the promoter who was in attendance. I was handed a flyer for what should be an awesome event. Wish I could attend. |
