Why do we still have it when so many people have to work on Labor Day. Labor Day was created as a day for everyone to rest and have a day off until some schmuch decided to leave his business open to corner the market. Then other places saw that worked and they copied him. Now more than 60% of the population has to work on Labor Day which being more than half kind of depletes the purpose of Labor Day being a holiday. It also used to be a holiday for kids who enjoyed one last party day before school came back but now school comes back before Labor Day for most kids. So while you enjoy your day off tomorrow think of those less fortunate that have to work.

Well.... its impossible for everyone not to work. My type of job is 24/7 and someone always need to be doing it. All of the "non critical" employees get it off, but, anyone who keeps the show going, is there. Ill be @ work and took my "holiday" last thursday. I hate holidays so i can care less when i work them.

1-Yes, let's just shut down all our gas stations, toll booths, and airlines so people who travel for the holiday get stranded. Let's just shut down all of our stores, festivals, and shopping malls so people can sit home and not enjoy the holiday. Let's just shut down all of our TV and radio stations so people who sit home during the holiday have nothing to do.

2-Why would I think about someone who is working Labor Day? They are likely getting compensated appropriately for it. If they're not, they shouldn't allowed themselves to work that day or taken the job in the first place.

3-Lol @ you creating this bitchfest thread because you likely have to work tomorrow.

actually I'm not working tomorrow but I have a lot of friends who do and I feel bad for them. All I'm saying is it's not a holiday when so many people don't celebrate it. Let's call Sunday a holiday since more people get that day off than labor day

Again, they are likely getting compensated for it. If they're not, then they're either stupid for saying yes to working Labor Day or they should find another job. I fail to see why this is such as issue to you.

I believe he was being sarcastic. People who don't live with their parents have to take second jobs even and it's not easy to find good work. Heck I worked at Blockbuster for 5 1/2 years and I had to work every Christmas, New Years etc. You can't just say no.

you went into that job knowing you would have to work those days. It's common knowledge that they are open as those are big days for a place like that. Either suck it up or deal with it or find another job.

No sense in bitching and whining about it.

IF we go by your logic, amusement parks, shops, etc would be closed on what is of one of their biggest days for sales.

You really are a snake brody.

First off I didn't say I didn't know it I was merely pointing out that you can't just say no like Enforcer tried to imply.

Second there is more to life than money and that is my point in the first place about the guy who stayed open to corner the market.

and Third you are a loser and I really wish you would just ignore me if you don't like what I say.

Once again, you almost know what's going on, don't you?

When I first took a job in radio in 1995, I knew I would be working holidays. Most of my radio work for the first few years was on a part-time basis (because I was still in school), and I worked weekends and/or for those full-timers who either got the day off as a holiday or were on vacation. At the time, I took all the hours I could get, while still working around my school schedule. I have been at my current TV station for a little over six years. Yes, I am working today, but I am getting double time for it. I don't mind working on holidays like Memorial Day, Labor Day July 4, or even New Year's Day. However, I hate it when I have to work on Christmas. I would rather spend that day with my family. I really don't even know why I'm responding to your silly drivel, because nothing or nobody gets through to you.

what's your point. Blockbuster for example you get paid regular for most holidays. Christmas Day, Thanksgiving and New Years Day you get time and a half but that's it. Easter isn't even extra pay

Most companies dont consider Easter a holiday and don't pay anything for it. Stop being a whining bitch about it. The point is people have to work on holidays. If you had half brain you would realize that.

In my job, Labor day is one of the paid holidays, w Christmas, New Years, Thanksgiving, and Memorial Day, and thats it. It all varies by job. Banks and some places get "lesser holidays" w pay off, and as Shawn and others have said, other jobs you work today, and get regular pay.

You're such a moron. That stupid sentence simply proves now that you have no idea what's going on at all.

Ghost: about the pay thing...the company I work for gives us double time if we work on a company holiday. If I don't work that day/am not scheduled to work, I still get holiday pay...which is simply the same amount if I were to work on a normal day.
