He's redefined himself.

And he's a Yankee with a World Series Ring (just like Johnny Damon).

Pudge is his nickname. That's why people refer to him as Pudge. However, when they put his name up on the screen, the first name is Ivan.

You really wouldn't want to call him Pudge if you remembered the catcher who first had that nickname, Sox (Red and White) great Carlton Fisk. I'm a Pudge Fisk fan, so Rodriguez has been I-Rod for me for a while.

Less drama, more wrestling, please.

I believe early in his career someone saw similarities between Rodriguez and Fisk in their catching/game-calling styles, and it developed from there. I remember Rodriguez being called Pudge on televised games as early as '93 (that's dating myself a little...). Don't ask me why Fisk got the nickname, as I have no idea.

Less drama, more wrestling, please.

Miss Nox had me wondering too. So, here is a link..

http://www.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20041110&content_id=912462&vkey=news_bos&fext=.jsp&c_id=bos

And, from down in the interview, here it is.. Smile

siriceman64: Pudge, how did you get your nickname?

Fisk: I got it when I was a baby. When I was one year old, I weighed 36 pounds and I was 36 inches long. And I stayed big and round and uncoordinated until I was about 15 years old. Then I grew something like eight inches in one year when I was 17 or 18 years old. I don't know who gave me the nickname "Pudge," but I think it was an aunt
