The problem with all CT promotions is they have no direction. The cards are just a mashup of locals and washed up workers from Titan. It's not the booker's fault b/c budgets are tight, it's tough to consistently book veteran out of state workers due to their travel/higher booking fee while at the same time avoid double booking shows that conflict with said workers' previous engagements to other promotions. Let alone, with the size of most show's crowds, tickets prices would also have to increase to justify paying the workers.
There is also too much of a concentration of promotions in this small state. How many times a month can you see the same guys, working the same way, saying the same things in multiple promotions. Even worse, all promotions imitate the WWE/TNA. The best thing they could do is separate themselves from that. They'll never have the budget to compete. Let alone production quality and promotion. Paul Heyman (ECW) understood this.
What they should do is go in an entirely different direction, to pull in a new group of fans that have given up on "Sports Entertainment". Much like ROH did in its first 2 years of existence, until they fell into the same rut.
The best thing that could happen is a few promotions falling off and leaving 1 or 2 to grow stronger w/ less competition. Unfortunately this would give the workers less pay days but might force them to work in more states like Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, etc. This would make all the local promotions fresh by transferring local talent unseen by other states much like the NWA did back in the glory days.
This state also needs more wrestling schools. The only really successful one I know about is Jason Knights. We need more schools in this state, so potential workers won't have to drive far too join, which might prevent them now due to their personal budgets and work schedules. If there was one in every county, there would be a school within 1/2's driving time for everyone no matter where you live.
This way the state's own promotion(s) will be able to replenish their ranks themselves in the future without having to lean on other states. These schools should be created by true workers though, that have been in the business for a couple decades. Instructors that have a real feel for the business and know what works and what doesn't. Not someone who ran a merch table that thinks it would be cool to book a show or run a school just b/c he likes wrestling.
But what do I know, I'm only a mark! |
A handjob is still a job, OK

Interesting, but I don't see how established promotions like PGW have no direction, and its not because I like them either. Each show has a flow from the prior month, and things aren't "Mishmoshed together". DPW also had a flow to it, and likely will again.
The rest of what you said makes a lot of sense though. But, like anything else, sometimes, any Tom Dick or Harry thinks they can "reinvent the wheel" so to speak, and become a big success. Im not so sure it has to be a "style" of hi profile/impact wrestling like ROH, or mainly casual shows like NEW, but any type of show that the fans come to, and more importantly, RETURN TO, and holds their interest. That is the winning formula. |

GG, might it be the same type thing as WWE/TNA seeing the same people in the spot light and the same matches over and over again. |

Thats not true at all. Ohio Valley Wrestling.. Watch it from 1999-2007. They didn't have the same matches. They built story lines and allowed things to develope |

You hit it on the head. I said the same thing in a post a few weeks back.... IMO... i liked it when it was PGW and DPW. PGW offered a mainly family friendly show, with there own talent, local talent, and some sprinkled from everywhere. DPW offered a very "ECW" like style, in your face, smashmouth style... a few of there own guys, local guys, and some ex ECW guys. Both products were VERY VERY different.
Then DPW fell apart, and while they were in there "hiatus" ACW came back and started there own promotion. Then another person felt it was a good idea to have a promotion run back at Crystals with a combo of talent. Then someone else felt they can do something different again and have a one-off show in guilford.
Now, PGW offered up some exclusive talent that was home grown. The only place you use to be able to see Lukas Sharp, Andy Sweet, Mr Williams, etc... was PGW. It made PGW a little more unique and special. Now, with some/all of those guys working for CTWE, DPW and ACW, its making it less unique and special.
But this is the same cycle CT goes through every few years..... remember when we had NAWF, CCW, Snake Brody Wrestling, PWA, and WCWA with other people running one off shows? Same thing now... ill be willing to bet by next summer, we are back to 2 promotions.
ACW is offering a little of the "old" some of what we usually see in CT, and some of there own students.
DPW is coming back with a lot of the same guys, and, a few different ones.
PGW is offering strong storylines and making use of their resources with getting major radio stations and the guys who have been there since day 1.
CTWE seems to be a collection of all 3.
Apparently WCWA is coming back (Whopptie doo) and who knows who else wants to be their own promoter these days. Apparently, people think it can be done better then the next guy.
Ill be interesting to see the DPW vs ACW war and how DPW does out of the dojo. PGW still keeps drawing 200+ and hopefully they stay that way.
Support who you want to support, or, go to everything but one thing ive learned is, this state isnt big enough for all these promotions...or egos. |

CT has plenty of wrestling, some good choices, as do neighboring states. Go to what you want, and stop being a bitch, Shane. |

CT has room for 4 promotions.
DPW - ECW wannabe atmosphere with its own core of guys, call it a risque local indy.
PGW - A lot more family friendly with its own core of guys, call it a family's local indy.
And then you have room for a large mark promotion (NEW comes to mind) and a large indy promotion (ROH), there's your four, and if there's someone who can straddle the middle like MXW used to do by bringing in indy names and use them with local talent, that's a plus, since none of the other 4 seem to do that. |

Poop. EPW and NCW are both fine promotions, and twenty lashes from Mistress Asia to FF for not mentioning those promotions in his thoughts. |

I don't think the CT indy scene is in a sad state at all. You have PGW running fairly consistently. DPW coming back soon. ACW, I think it's CTWE running in Bristol in a few weeks. The only sad thing about it is I can't get to enough of these shows. |

I don't think CT indy wrestling is in a sad state at all. Over the summer, when we hardly had any shows at all in the mid-to-Western part of the state, THAT was sad. (If understandable - summer is a slow season for rasslin and a lot of companies like to suspend operations for July & August.) Right now we've got PGW, DPW, ACW and CTWE, plus the aforementioned Eastern-half feds, plus occasional visitors like ROH, NEW and BTW. Seems prety good to me. Some of us do like having, ya know, actual shows to go to. |

Time yes, but other means no. But again, people don't want to hear about my sad story of woe, theyve had to enough over the years, and certainly not yours either. Go when you can, and enjoy them, and stop crying on here about it. |
